![]() (L-R) Ian Hart as Denis Goldberg, Daniel Radcliffe as Tim Jenkin and Daniel Webber as Stephen Lee in the drama/thriller ESCAPE FROM PRETORIA, a Momentum Pictures release. These conferences drift a little towards the idealistic and away from the hyper-realism that permeates the rest of the movie. This is admirable on one hand, but on the other, it means that the film occasionally does a fair share of telling/not showing regarding their motivation for escape in the first place. When we’re reminded of it through dialogue, the protagonists debate what they’re fighting for and argue over the morality of an escape attempt. The inmates’ perspective is strictly adhered to and the film doesn’t cheat by cutting away, beyond the prison walls. Granted, it’s effective when used, but, like a lot of VO, there’s not much consistency to it and the story would have been better off either without it entirely or with more of it at more consistent intervals, including the ending to match the intro. The film bears few flaws, but among them is the spotty use of voiceover (VO). The pacing is excellent and builds masterfully to every moment of tension. Even when you think there can’t possibly be any more nail-biting scenes left, where the tension cannot be prolonged any further, another twist follows that still manages to work. Those moments happen often they are the foundation and thrust of the film. Moments that shine most effectively are small, crucial beats that play out in real-time or – even better – when they feel agonizingly stretched across full sequences, all in the best possible way. The film opens with a brutal, sweeping punch of archival footage to set the stage and offer swift context, then pivots into a far more intimate tone. Daniel Radcliffe as Tim Jenkin in the drama/thriller ESCAPE FROM PRETORIA, a Momentum Pictures release. Despite the many and vast differences between Escape from Pretoria and The Great Escape(1963), they share something of a similar spirit you will find yourself engrossed in the characters’ plight whether you know the history or not. ![]() Strangely, I was reminded of Lincoln(2012), in that the story here is far more of a specific moment in specific lives, rather than a comprehensive historical examination of South Africa’s apartheid days or the complexity of the politics therein. This is not an expert delve into race relations, nor a daring exposé or keen look into history. Not quite.īased on Tim Jenkin’s book Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Central Prison , the film does follow Jenkin (Daniel Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber), two anti-apartheid activists, and their attempt to escape the white-only Pretoria Local Prison in 1979, but the film’s primary interest and focus is the intimate, moment-to-moment suspense, which makes up the bulk of the story with little time to spare for much else. The trailer gave me the impression that the film would be brutal: heavy on physical and psychological torture a deep look into the conditions of the time, regarding apartheid and then a harrowing escape attempt. While I didn’t come to Escape from Pretoria with an especially keen knowledge of the central figures, I did bring with me a hefty amount of apprehension. Though their internal debate is interesting, it’s less exciting than seeing prisoners sneaking around corners, trying to avoid getting caught.Escape from Pretoria (Francis Annan, 2020) 3 out of 4 stars. One of the escapees, Tim Jenkin, told his story in the 1987 book “Escape From Pretoria,” now a taut mid-budget thriller starring Daniel Radcliffe. ![]() ![]() More about the history of Zen Buddhism here. Chan Buddhists in China have much in common with Zen Buddhists in Japan. The Chinese character “Chan” was eventually pronounced as “Zen” in Japanese. However, it should be noted that Buddhism came from India, and “Chan Buddhism” evolved and developed in medieval China. Zen is used as the title of a branch of Mahayana Buddhism, which strongly emphasizes meditation practice. Regardless of the dictionary definition, more often than not, this character is associated with Buddhism. 禪 by itself just means “meditation.” In that context, it should not be confined to use by any one religion or sect. In English, it's almost always incorrectly used for phrases like “That's so zen.” Nobody says, “That's so meditation” - right? As the title of a sect, this would be like saying, “That's so Baptist!" The most common inscription on enso paintings, however, is simply, “What is this?” leaving the interpretation up to the viewer.First, let's correct something: The Japanese romanization for this character, “Zen” has penetrated the English language. Perhaps Soen Roshi means “The brilliance of the truth reveals all, nothing can be hidden, and one’s fruit-good and bad actions-will be known.” Or from a more Zen perspective, maybe he is saying, “This sun enso symbolizes the perfect clarity and all-embracing nature of enlightenment that results in awakened acts.” My favorite Soen Zen circle is a “sun enso,” shown here, as opposed to the much more orthodox “moon enso,” inscribed with one of his haiku: “In broad daylight/everything comes together in a circle/and bears fruit.” Enso inscriptions can always be interpreted on several levels and have different shades of meaning. ![]() Nakagawa Soen (1907-1984), one of the fathers of Zen in the West, loved to brush enso. Another inscription, “Within the ever revolving circle of human passions, things come and go, come and go,” represents a wheel.Ĭertain inscriptions on an enso painting serve as koan: “This is your parents’ face before they were born.” Since humor is an important element of Zen, sometimes the inscriptions are more impish: “Is this the moon? A rice cake? The top of a bucket? Or maybe just the bald head of a monk!” A famous verse from the Chinese Zen poet Hanshan-“My heart is like the autumn moon’’-indicates that the enso symbolizes the moon-mind of enlightenment. Enso can represent zero, so the inscriptions Mu (nothing) or Honrai muichi motsu (Originally not one thing!) are common. “In heaven and on earth I am the Only Honored One!”- Shakyamuni’s bold declaration at his birth-is a popular inscription. Some enso paintings are naked and mysterious, but most have an accompanying inscription to serve as a “hint” as to the Zen meaning of the circle. Most begin in the left-hand corner of the paper, but others start at the top or bottom. Some are thick and massive others are thin and delicate. Some are done in one bold stroke others are composed with two half circles. Some Zen circles are perfectly symmetrical others are completely lopsided. Together with portraits of Bodhidharma, nearly every Zen master since the time of Hakuin has produced enso paintings as meditation aids for their students and patrons.Įach Zen master has his or her own style, and that individuality is clearly expressed in the ensos they brush. ![]() Thereafter, enso paintings became a primary teaching vehicle in East Asian Buddhism, especially in Japan. The earliest known example of an enso painting is by the Chinese Zen Master Kyozan (814-890) as recorded in the Keitokudento-roku. The first Zen painting was almost certainly an enso, brushed for a student who needed something concrete to contemplate, a visual expression of enlightenment. In the Shinjinmei, an early Zen text, the way of buddha is described as “a circle like vast space, lacking nothing, nothing in excess.” In short, an enso defines the Zen state of mind.Įnso can be written in the air, drawn in the dirt, or, most typically, brushed on paper. Right from the beginning of the Buddhist tradition, enlightenment was compared to the “bright full moon” and a “great round mirror.” In the biography of the Prajnaparamita master Nagarjuna, it states that whenever he taught in public, the master would appear as a luminous circle in order to reveal the true form of buddhanature: “Neither large nor small, neither wide nor narrow, neither good nor bad, neither transient nor eternal.” Bodhidharma, the grand patriarch of Zen, was called the “Great Teacher of Circle Enlightenment.” The Sixth Patriarch Huineng was said to have employed the use of ninety-six types of circles in his teachings. Enso, a Japanese word meaning “circular form” and usually translated into English as “Zen circle,” is the symbol supreme of Buddhist enlightenment. ![]() ![]() Push a magic button and enjoy! She says they’ve curbed her need to overpack (but still let her cram in a few maybe-not-quite-necessary outfits). She finally used the gifted cubes that had sat unused and was shocked at the difference they made in her luggage. Then she moved to a tiny apartment in New York with only enough storage space for a carry-on - she couldn’t pack five pairs of shoes for a three-day trip and count on a checked bag to hold them all. The set comes with three sizes of cubes - extra-small, small, and medium - with the medium the right size for shirts and shorts, and the smaller ones ideal for underwear and socks, according to Kamer. An Eagle Creek “not only compartmentalizes your luggage but helps you cram whatever’s inside it into an incredibly small, predetermined place too,” Kamer says. Kamer calls them “The Russian nesting doll of luggage,” which is essentially “an empty, square bag with a zipper” - simple but effective. We’ve heard great things about the packing cubes from Eagle Creek since they were first recommended to us in 2018. Sizes: Extra-small (7.5 x 4.5 x 2.5”) Small (10 x 7 x 3”) Medium (14 x 10 x 3”) | Non-compression | Not waterproof Once your cubes are filled, “things just fit around each other in the bag perfectly.” To help you find the right packing cubes for your trip (and packing style), we pulled in recommendations from experts, frequent fliers, and Strategist staff. “Cubes kind of work like mini-compression sacks,” says Aly Simmons, an operations partner at REI. “By the second or third time you use them, you’ll already know exactly what fits where and how much of it you can take with you - down to the very last sock.” And they’re not just great for organization: Packing cubes can help you fit more inside your luggage. With packing cubes, “all of a sudden everything has its place before you’ve even packed it,” says editor and self-proclaimed overpacker Foster Kamer. They make travel less chaotic (at least as far as your luggage is concerned). In a world without packing cubes, we’d probably all be constantly piling items from one end of a suitcase to the other, searching for that one T-shirt or pair of socks. ![]() ![]() ![]() One that I recommend to just about anyone.
